Harmonium Audition Information

Harmonium Choral Society will be conducting auditions for a limited number of openings in all voice parts for experienced singers with good sight-reading ability. Auditions for the 2025-2026 concert season will be held by appointment starting August 24th going through September 3rd.  Auditions will be held at Grace Church in Madison, 4 Madison Ave. at Kings Rd., in the choir room with Artistic Director Dr. Anne Matlack.

Singers should be experienced choral singers and sight-readers. Admission is highly selective. The conductor will vocalize you and test your range, ear, musicianship, and sight-reading. A prepared solo is requested to show off your strengths in something you know—it need not be long or complex—art song, hymn, folk song, music theater, or choral excerpt.

If accepted, rehearsals begin in September 7th and are held at Grace Church in Madison on Sunday nights. There will be one Saturday morning rehearsal per concert season, and Tuesday/Friday dress rehearsals before each concert. Harmonium schedules three major concerts per season - this season dates are December 13 & 14, 2025, March 7 & 8, 2026, and June 6 & 7, 2026 - as well as a Chamber Singers concert. There are also special appearances throughout the year.

Harmonium concert soloists are usually selected from the chorus’s 100-voice membership, over one-third of whom are professional musicians and/or music educators. Members are also invited to audition for the Harmonium Chamber Singers, a 25-voice vocal ensemble selected from the full Harmonium chorus.

Please sign-up for our e-newsletter below. There is an annual fee to be a singing member of the choir and consideration is given to those who might need assistance.

Thank you for your interest in singing with Harmonium Choral Society!

“This year I gave myself the best “me” gift ever: joining the Harmonium Choral Society!  After almost two decades of putting my music profession on hold to raise two daughters AND large amounts of money for marginalized people, I’m finally in the position to refocus on the personal activities that give me the most joy.  Lucky me:  I found Harmonium.  It’s easy to see why Harmonium singers are so enthusiastic, are members for decades, and return in high numbers.

In addition to getting to sing an exhaustively eclectic body of work found and directed by the exceptional Dr. Anne Matlack, Harmonium is a welcoming, inclusive community of more than one hundred bright, friendly, highly professional, and TALENTED artists of all ages. At the risk of sounding boastful, the collective sound of this group is practically ethereal. And although I wasn’t necessarily looking for a new community, I found an extraordinary one! A baritone recently shared, “Harmonium has an uncanny way of infusing itself into your life…in a good way!” I can’t agree more. Gratefully”.
